Former Director: Md. Shafiqur Rahman

Mr. Md. Shafiqur Rahman was the first Director from Bangladesh to the BIMSTEC Permanent Secretariat, Dhaka. A mid-level career diplomat, he was attached to the Secretariat in June 2014 to make it operational and he served till the end of May 2015. As the founder Director of the Secretariat, he took deep interests in laying the foundation of the Secretariat while giving it an institutional form. He undertook some pioneering works with regard to its structural set-up and professional outlook in making the Secretariat functional.
Mr. Rahman joined Bangladesh Civil Service (Foreign Affairs) in May 2003. Prior joining the Foreign Service, he worked as a Senior Lecturer in English at Tertiary and Post-graduation levels in some Private Universities in Dhaka, Bangladesh from 1999-2003.
In the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Rahman worked in different capacities in various bilateral and multilateral desks. He was elevated to the rank of Director / Counselor in July 2012. For professional assignments, he was nominated to represent Bangladesh in some bilateral, regional and international fora. In a special assignment, he served Bangladesh Mission in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from 2005-2009 as Second Secretary (Political).
Mr. Rahman obtained a BA (Honours) and MA degree in English from the University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh where he was nominated the Secretary of the Department of English at the University for the year 1997-1998. He also did a MA in International Relations at International University of Japan, Niigata under the Japanese Development Scholarship (JDS) in which he excelled as the Valedictorian of the University for the year 2012.
Mr. Rahman also received professional training in UK, Australia, Japan and Norway. He also authored few articles and write-ups in the national and international journals. His academic and research interests cover Regional Cooperation and Integration in Asia, Global Development discourse, Climate Change diplomacy, Peace studies i.e. peacekeeping and peace-building, evolving Foreign Policy issues and inter alia developments in the Asia Pacific region.
Mr. Rahman is currently posted in Bangladesh Embassy in Cairo, Egypt. He is married with two children.
