Mr. Md. Robiul Islam is a career diplomat who joined the BIMSTEC Secretariat on 18 May 2025 as the Fourth Director representing Bangladesh.

 

Before assuming his current role, Mr. Islam served as the Director General of the United Nations Wing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. In his diplomatic career, he has held several important positions including in the capacity of Director General of the Inspection Wing, and Director of UN, South Asia and Africa Wing. He also served in various multilateral, territorial, and other important Wings including Multilateral Economic Affairs, East Asia and the Pacific, Public diplomacy and Protocol.

 

Mr. Islam has represented Bangladesh in overseas postings as a Counsellor at the Permanent Mission in Geneva, Switzerland, and the Embassy in Manama, Bahrain. Throughout his diplomatic service, he played an important role in negotiating for Bangladesh in different multilateral and bilaterial settings.

 

A seasoned diplomat with extensive expertise in multilateral negotiations, policy coordination, and international diplomacy, Mr. Islam is recognized for his strategic approach to advancing issues of common interest. He has actively participated in and contributed to the negotiations/discussions in different processes including, inter alia, UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, UN Human Rights Council, Universal Periodic Review, Bilaterial Agreements etc.

 

Mr. Islam holds a Master’s degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering and a Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics & Electronics both from the University of Dhaka. He also pursued academic training in international relations and diplomacy in Australia.

 

He is married and blessed with one daughter.
