Mrs. Sonam C. Namgyel joined the BIMSTEC Secretariat on 04 February 2026 as the Director of Environment and Climate Change and is the fourth Director representing Bhutan.
Mrs. Namgyel is a senior career diplomat with extensive experience in Bhutan’s Foreign Service, spanning bilateral relations, multilateral diplomacy, and international political and security affairs. Prior to joining the BIMSTEC Secretariat, Mrs. Namgyel served as Chief of the Political and International Security Division in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & External Trade of the Kingdom of Bhutan.
Mrs. Namgyel has served in the Royal Government of Bhutan’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York and Royal Bhutanese Embassy in New Delhi, India.
Ms. Namgyel holds a Master of Science in International Public Policy from University College London in the United Kingdom. She also holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Administration from the Royal Institute for Management in Bhutan and a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations and Economics from Mount Holyoke College, United States.
