
Director
Mr. Uttam Kumar Shahi, a career diplomat from Nepal Foreign Service, joined the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Secretariat as a Director on 16 March 2025. He is the third Director from Nepal serving at the Secretariat.
Prior to this appointment, Mr. Shahi was serving as the Undersecretary at the Office of the Foreign Minister of Nepal. Earlier he also worked as Deputy Chief of Protocol at the Foreign Ministry and Undersecretary at the International Relations Division, Office of the President of Nepal. In the early years after joining the Foreign Service in 2010, Mr. Shahi served as a passport officer at the Department of Passports, section Officer at the General Administration Division, and United Nations, International Organizations and International Law Division at the Foreign Ministry.
During his career, Mr. Shahi represented Nepal as Counsellor/Deputy Permanent Representative at the Embassy/Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, Switzerland (2019-2023) and Second/First Secretary at the Embassy of Nepal in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (2012- 2016).
His academic credentials include Bachelor of Laws (LLB), Bachelor of Science (BSc.) and Master of Arts in Political Science from Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu.
He has attended several trainings and workshops on Human rights, trade, administration and diplomacy and has also obtained Certificate of Advanced Studies in Public governance and Administration from ETH Zurich.
He is married and blessed with two children.
