BIMSTEC Sub-Group discusses a range of steps for the prevention of illicit trafficking in narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and precursor chemicals

The 6th Meeting of the BIMSTEC Sub-Group on Prevention of Illicit Trafficking in Narcotic Drugs, Psychotropic Substances and Precursor Chemicals was held on 28-29 October 2021, hosted by Sri Lanka in virtual format. In his remarks, the Secretary General of BIMSTEC, Tenzin Lekphell, informed the Meeting formally regarding the entry into force of the BIMSTEC Convention on Cooperation in Combating International Terrorism, Transnational Organized Crime and Illicit Drug Trafficking, on 16 March 2021, upon ratification by all Member States, which facilitates greater cooperation. Matters discussed at the Meeting included the BIMSTEC Action Plan on Drug Control, publication of the BIMSTEC Annual Drug report, measures to enhance the capacities of Member States for preventing and suppressing illicit trafficking in narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and precursor chemicals, setting up a hotline to be used by focal points, and setting up an electronic BIMSTEC Drug Offences Monitoring Desk to facilitate sharing of intelligence and information on matters relating to drug trafficking.
